ORION’s O3 service will be concluding on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at 12:00 PM (EDT).

O3 has successfully empowered thousands of users from Ontario’s research, education and innovation communities to actively connect, communicate and collaborate with one another in hundreds of private O3 community sites and spaces.

The origins of O3 can be traced back to a gathering of researchers, administrators and CIOs representing ORION’s connected institutions in 2007. Their challenge in the Information Age, they said, was finding the right information in a timely manner. In 2009, ORION responded to this need by launching O3, our cloud-based collaboration platform, enabling them to share information and connect their communities of practice.

Today, with the emergence and adoption of social media, as well as prolific Internet and mobile technologies, our world is hyper-connected. When our customers need a collaboration platform to support their work, there are now numerous tools available. Therefore, ORION has decided to conclude the O3 service, and entrust our users to specialists in online workspaces.

To aid in this transition, ORION recommends some options:

  1. Igloo Software, the underlying platform that powers O3, can seamlessly transition an existing O3 site onto their platform. This free solution is available for up to 10 named users.
  2. Palomino/WebPal offers free storage and content management software, ‘WebPal RDM Cloud Server.’
  3. O3 users affiliated with York University are encouraged to explore York University Research Computing options at and inquire by email to

We are committed to helping our community through this evolution. In the coming days, our resident expert, Community Development Manager, Simon Chen, will contact you to discuss and evaluate free and paid collaboration software alternatives or to help wind down your sites and spaces, if that’s what you choose.

We thank you for being a valuable member of O3’s community and look forward to supporting you during this transition.
